Cochin - Munnar - Thekkady - Kumarakom - Kovalam - Kanyakumari - Trivandrum

Itinerary


  • Day 1: Cochin - Munnar

    Arrival at Cochin airport/ railway station and transfer to Munnar. This beautiful hill station was once the summer capital of the British Government in India. The never ending vast expanse of tea plantations and the round the year moderate climate makes it a little haven for visitors. Transfer to the hotel.
    Overnight in Munnar.
     
  • Day 2: Munnar

    After breakfast, visit to Rajamala- house of the highly endangered mountain goats - the Nilgiri Thars.
    Rajamala (15 km from Munnar) : The Nilgiri tahr, a very rare type of mountain goat (Hemitragas bylocres) , on the verge of extinction.

Half the world population of this rare goat is seen in and around Rajamala. The kurinji flowers blooming once in twelve years abound here. The combination of these two rare sights will make any visitor come again and again to this place.

Nyamakad (10 kms from Munnar) : On the way to Rajamala from Munnar is another paradise of woodlands and waterfalls. This is a popular picnic spot with perennial waterfalls and refreshing greenery.

  • Day 3: Munnar

    After breakfast visit to Top Station. Top Station offers panoramic view of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Then to Echo point and Mattupetty Dam. Speed boating facilities are available here. The dam is flanked by forests and wast expanse of grass land on one side and the Kundala tea plantation on the other. After noon at leisure.
    Overnight in Munnar.
     
  • Day 4: Munnar – Thekkady (Periyar)

    Munnar - Periyar (wild life sanctuary & Spice plantation). Morning proceed to Thekkady. By noon at Thekkady. Afternoon at Periyar lake around which the sanctuary is built, for boating (cost extra). This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing the wild life at close quarters from the safety of a boat.
    Overnight in Thekkady.
     
  • Day 5: Periyar - Kumarakom (Backwaters – House Boat )

    Drive to Kumarakam. On the shores of the picturesque Vembanad lake - a freshwater lagoon - Kumarakom is a cluster of fishing villages 14 kilometers from Kottayam. Today you will board a Kettuvalam the famous Houseboats of Kerala. You spend the day cruising through the unique web of lakes, lagoons, canals and rivers . You stay the night onboard your Houseboat.
     
  • Day 6: Kumarakom

    After breakfast check out and check in to hotel at Kumarakom.Rest of the day at leisure or one can opt to visit Bird Sanctuary is a diamond in India's ecological crown, despite being one of the smallest parks in the country. A visit to Kumarakom, nesting on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, will give you the pleasure to meet a variety of migratory birds that cluster in thousands, some from the Himalayas, and some even from the snow-kissed hills of Siberia, a true multicultural avian metropolis. During the rains, some of India's most spectacular avians gather in their finest haunts to court their mates and nest in huge colonies in the trees lining the paths of the sanctuary. Later return to the hotel.

  • Day 7: Kumarakom – Kovalam

    Morning after breakfast check out from the houseboat and proceed to Kovalam- the internationally renowned beach destination. Spend the rest of the day in the sandy beaches of Kovalam flanked by coconut groves on one side and Arabian sea on the other.
    Overnight at the beach side hotel.
     
  • Day 8: Kovalam – Kanyakumari - Kovalam

    Morning after breakfast proceed to Kanyakumari- the southern tip of Indian sun continent. Visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial , Temple Bhagavathi, Thiruvalluvur Statue ,Gandhi Memorial and witness the majestic sunset.

    Temple Bhagavathi: Goddess Bhagavathi Temple in Kanyakumari is picturesquely located at the confluence of the three oceans - the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Originally built by Pandyas, it was expanded later by Nayaks. The image of the Goddess in the sanctum looks serene and beneficent. The eastern gate of the temple facing the Bay of Bengal is opened only five times a year.

    Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial: The memorial was erected to commemorate the evening of December 25, 1892, when Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari as a pilgrim and swam to the rock in the sea and spent the whole night there in deep meditation. Only after that, he resolved to serve his Motherland and spread the message of Vedanta.
    Gandhi Memorial: It enshrines the spot where the urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was kept for public view before immersing its contents in the three seas. Built like an Oriyan temple, the uniqueness in its construction lies in the fact that on October 2nd, Gandhiji's birthday, the sun's rays fall on the place where his ashes were kept.Return to Kovalam and overnight at the hotel.
     
  • Day 9: Kovalam

    Kovalam - Trivandrum (Capital City)-Kovalam. Morning after breakfast proceed to Trivandrum - Visit Napier Museum , Sri Chitra Art Gallery , Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple, Shankhumugham Beach and Trivandrum Zoo

    SRI PADMANABHASWAMY TEMPLE – Trivandrum Covering an area of about 2,400 sq. metres, the temple of Sri Padmanabhaswamy is believed to be around 260 years old. The temple with its gopuram (tower) soaring majestically upwards is believed to be one of the 108 shrines sacred to the Vaishnavites in India. The main entrance to the temple is through the eastern gopuram that towers to over 30 metres and is devised in the Dravidian style. The deity of the temple, Padmanabha (an incarnation of Vishnu) reclines on the sacred serpent in the inner sanctum. The main shrine inside the temple is well guarded with a number of massive doors and darshan (audience) can be had through the three-door openings into the sanctum sanctorum.

    NAPIER MUSEUM - Trivandrum Dating back to 1880, the Napier Museum building is a combination of the Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles. The building has a unique natural air-conditioning system. A visit to this museum gives you glimpses of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. The museum has an excellent collection of bronzes, historic ornaments, ivory carvings and chariots, and life-size figures of the Kathakali dancers in full costume.

    SRI CHITRA ART GALLERY - Trivandrum The Sri Chitra Art Gallery houses paintings from the Mughal, Rajput and Tanjore schools of art. Besides these, the gallery has a rare collection of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, Svetoslav and Nicholas Roerich. An Oriental collection consisting of paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali are a visual treat to the visitor.

    ZOO AT - Trivandrum The spacious zoological garden is set among the pleasant surroundings of woodlands and lakes. The garden provides delightful shaded walks for the visitors. You can also have a look at the wide variety of the animals and birds that are housed here. The Reptile House has a collection of snakes worth seeing. The nearby botanical gardens have a large number of trees that can be easily identified by their labels. Later transfer to Kovalam.

  • Day 10: Kovalam - Trivandrum

    After breakfast transfer to airport/railway station for your onward journey
